Phil Mickelson had remained away from major action due to personal family reasons.

Several top names will miss the action at Shinnecock Hills, with Phil Mickelson among the biggest absentees. He stepped away from competitive golf earlier this year due to a personal family health matter. He had already missed the PGA Championship and the Masters.

Mickelson's five-year major exemption from his 2021 PGA Championship victory has also ended, which means he will need another route to earn a place in future events.

Tiger Woods is another major name absent from the tournament. The three-time U.S. Open champion remains away from the sport as he continues his recovery after a vehicle incident earlier this year. Marco Penge also withdrew due to health issues after a viral infection. Meanwhile, Max Homa and Tony Finau failed to earn spots in the field through the qualification process.
